Versions and URLs

Every OATS release has a version, such as 0.8.0. A released version never changes, so a record validated against it today validates the same way forever.

How versions work

  • All schemas share one release version. A release may add, change or remove schemas; the changelog lists what changed in each.
  • Before OATS 1.0, a new minor version may reject records an older one accepted, or the reverse. Validate each record against the version it was written for, and record that version alongside your data.
  • Each schema states its version: in x-version from 0.8.0, and in version up to 0.7.0. From 0.7.0, its $id includes the version too.
  • The Python, JavaScript and Rust packages bundle several versions and default to the newest. Each takes an exact version, such as "0.8.0", when you need to pin one.

URLs

Every schema is published at its $id. You can pin its URL in validators, pipelines and other schemas.

The schema exactly as released. This is its $id, and it is cached as immutable.

The same file, for tools that prefer a query parameter. Versions must be exact, such as 0.8.0, never latest.

The latest release, with a Link: rel="canonical" header naming its versioned URL. Pin a version for anything that must not change.

Responses are application/schema+json with Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, so browser-based validators can fetch them directly. Releases before 0.7.0 use the identifiers https://dorsalhub.com/schemas/open/<name>, and their URLs here redirect to DorsalHub, which serves them.
